Rurik came over about half an hour later than usual. "I got the books you asked for." He set them on the breakfast table. "Is that non-snake still here?"
"Yeah, Theo is sill here. He's in the toilet." I answered, clicking the TV off. I stood up, and walked over. "He wanted to know what the council does if they find girls hiding out."
"I say that it's a bad idea. Once he knows about our culture he'll have to be initiated." Halek protested.
"Then we just tell him what he needs to know about the subject." Rurik reasoned, opening one of the books. "If it'll get him out of our hair then it should be fine. I'm sure that the council will understa
I was in the park. I had gotten a letter last night. I found a sturdy-looking tree and began to climb it. The normals there hardly noticed me. I'm a snake, after all. They didn't care about our kind. I sat on a high branch, keeping watch for whoever sent me the letter. The letter said that I would know when I saw him. But all the snakes are male, how can I know who?
"Hey!" A familiar voice called.
I guess I fell asleep, since my vision was blurry. I yawned, rubbing my eyes. "Are you the one who sent the letter?" I jumped down.
He nodded. "Finally, you're talking to me."
I then knew who it was. "Th-Theo? Oh no."
"What is it?"
"I can't ha
I hadn't talked to Theo since that night. I've seen him around, but wasn't allowed to hang out with him because he wasn't a snake. I took a bite of cereal. "C'mon, Halek, I told you that Theo and I are only friends."
Halek sat across from me. He refused to talk.
I was used to him not talking in public, but this is his own home. "Rurik, please talk to him."
Rurik bit off a piece of his toast. "You do know what happens when you hang out with a non-snake, right?"
"I know." I grabbed onto my charm, still attached to the belt loop. Your charm meant your life in this ordeal. If you gravitate around non-snakes, your charm will be confiscated and
I motioned Theo to come into the building. "It's in here."
Theo came in, holding three bags worth of valuables. "Whoa, it's like a triple arcade in here."
He was kind of right. The flea market consisted throughout this whole building. Though it wasn't really 'kid friendly'. Dull blades and bullet shells lay about the tables. Men with stubble ran the stands. A few glared at us. "It's all right, Theo. Don't freak out." I stopped by Rurik's stand.
"Hey, newbie brought home some scraps." Rurik teased.
"Got anything for a cracked mirror, Rurik?" I asked, pulling out the mirror from my back pack.
"I can give you a long chain for that."
"Deal.
"What was that kid's deal with me?" Theo asked, holding a bag of spray paint.
"Halek? He's just shy."
"I don't think that's what 'shy' means."
"Well, then let's forget about it." I walked into the alley way.
"You're not thinking of using the fire escapes to get to your apartment, are you?"
"Do you want to explain to your aunt why we're bringing spray paint into her building?"
Theo sighed, handing me his bag. "Fine, but just this time."
I pulled myself onto the ladder, and grabbed both of the bags. "Wait here, my pop might have his friends over."

I jumped off the ladder. "There, I dropped it off."
"What now?"
"We go to the dum
"Daddy! Daddy!" I ran over to him.
"What is it, little dude?"
"I got a prize from my teacher!" I showed him the cloth package.
He held it in his hand. "Oh! It's a- what is this?"
I smiled. "You have to open it. My teacher won't tell me what it is. She told me to not open it until I got home. I bet that it's really cool!"
Daddy smiled as he untied the ribbon, and a snake charm fell into his hand. His smile disappeared.
I tilted my head in confusion. "Daddy, what's wrong?"
His smile quickly reappeared, it seemed different than his usual smile. "Oh, nothing little dude."
I blinked, puzzled. Then I smiled again. "Okay!" I had just turned
"So, why did you bring me to the diner?" Theo asked, fidgeting as a few people stared at us.
I took a sip of the milkshake. "You wanted to know about the snake charm, right? This is a good place to start."
Theo blushed a bit. "Then why do we have to share a milkshake? Can't we get our own?"
"Sorry Theo. But it'll be better for later. You'll get cred for hangin' out with me like this."
"So, do I have to drink some too?"
I shrugged. "Do what you want."
Theo wouldn't drink any, he said he was 'too embarrassed'. He stood up. "I'm gonna use the bathroom. I'll be back, okay?"
I nodded, tossing the empty cup into the trash behind me. "I'm got
"Hello!" I greeted her with false enthusiasm. "How are you, doctor?"
"I'm doing pretty well, what about you?"
"Pretty good." I lied. "I just finished the school day a little bit ago."
"Did anything happen?"
"No, nothing really. It was just a usual day."
"Do you remember your name?"
"Of course."
"What is it?"
